چکیده

Preoperative bacterial culture studies have been done in the past on eyes of patients un dergoing cataract surgery." The purpose of these studies in part was to determine the bacterial flora of the eyelids and conjunctiva and also to determine whether any specific organisms were responsible for postopera tive infections. Dunnington and Khorazo show a correlation between the preoperative bacterial flora and the infrequent case in which postoperative infection occurred. The microorganisms present on the eye lids and conjunctiva preoperatively are free to invade the eye once the anterior chamber has been entered, as in cataract surgery. A recent case of staphylococcal endophthalmitis following an uncomplicated cataract ex traction at Cook County Hospital prompted us to determine whether or not microorga nisms can be demonstrated in cultures of the aqueous humor immediately upon completion of the cataract operation.

Aqueous cytokines as predictors of macular edema in non-diabetic patients following uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery

PURPOSE To ascertain whether cytokines in the aqueous humor can predict macular edema (ME) in non-diabetic patients following uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery. METHODS Undiluted aqueous humor samples were obtained from 288 consecutive non-diabetic patients (288 eyes; 132 men and 156 women) who underwent cataract surgery. Macular edema was defined as an increase in the foveal...

Aqueous Levels of Anti-Helicobacter Pylori IgG Antibody in Patients with Primary Open Angle and Pseudoexfoliation Glaucoma

Background: Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy and is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. Different factors have been contributed in the pathogenesis of glaucoma including H. pylori infection. Objective: To determine the levels of anti-H. pylori IgG antibody in the aqueous humor of patients with pseudoexfoliation and primary open angle glaucoma, in comparison with age and ...

Aqueous Cytokines as Predictors of Macular Edema in Patients with Diabetes following Uncomplicated Phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery

This study aims to ascertain whether cytokines in the aqueous humor can predict macular edema (ME) in diabetic patients following uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery. Undiluted aqueous humor samples were obtained from 136 consecutive type 2 diabetic patients who underwent cataract surgery. The concentrations of 27 cytokines were measured in aqueous humor using the multiplex bead ...

Aqueous Humor and Serum Concentrations of Soluble MICA and MICB in Glaucoma Patients

Background: Immune reactions have been reported to be involved in the destruction of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in glaucoma. Objective: To investigate the role of major histocompatibility complex class I-related chain A and B (MICA and MICB) molecules in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. Methods: Aqueous humor and serum samples from 15 glaucoma patients and 45 patients with cataract, undergoing ...

Lens epithelial cells in postoperative aqueous humor.

The aqueous humor during or after cataract surgery often contains red blood cells (RBCs) from blood; inflammatory cells from white blood cells (WBCs); fibrin, pigment cells, and fibroblasts from either the iris or the ciliary body; lens epithelial cells (LECs); and corneal endothelial cells. Since LECs may be related to postoperative complications, including a fibrin reaction and a secondary ca...
